Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas — born October 13, 1980, in Glen Cove, New York — was discovered by producer Irv Gotti and signed with Murder Inc. Records, an imprint of Def Jam Recordings, in 2002. That year she became the first female artist in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 to simultaneously occupy the top two chart positions: her debut single Foolish held number one while her featured appearance on Ja Rule's Always on Time was also at number one — along with her featured role on Fat Joe's What's Luv, making her triple presence in the top five one of the most statistically dominant debut runs in R&B chart history. Her self-titled debut album, released April 2002, debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, was certified triple platinum by the RIAA, and sold six million copies worldwide. At the 45th Grammy Awards (2003), she won Best Contemporary R&B Album — the first artist to win that category. Her follow-up Chapter II (2003) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and earned three Grammy nominations. In Las Vegas, she performs at Drai's Nightclub at The Vanderpump Hotel.
